Birmingham University Korfball Club was originally set-up in 1998 but folded after lack of interest in the sport. Three years later and the club was re-started by Ben Matthews and Tom Brady. Ben was a student at Birmingham University and also played in the British Student Development Squad, where as Tom has played for Britain on numerous occasions and coached the British Student Squad. With these two keen enthusiasts on board how could it fail?

Freshers fair in September 2001 came round and a total of around 90 names were gathered on a list, with the first training session to happen just one week later in a gym at a nearby school. The gym was packed out, with the 8 korfball posts gathered for the session not being to hold all the players.

At the beginnning of December 2001 the club entered a re-branding competition. They renamed themselves to The KorfKats, and deisgned a new logo along with some advertising material They won the competition, beating all oncomers to claim the financial reward which has set the club in good stead.

The club has now been going strong since the 2001 reopening. It has a solid 30-40 member base, and is a prominent club in the student korfball scene. It attends on average 7-8 tournaments a year as well as a summer trip away abroad to play in an international tournament. Previous years have included the Turkey, Holland, Belgium, Hungary and Bosnia.

The club won the coveted Fancy Dress Nottingham Tournament for two years running (2003 and 2004) as well as winning the best dressed team in both these years. This is commonly known as the 'double-double' within the club. No other clubs have succeeded coming close to this record.

Every year the team enter the main BUSA tournament, The Nationals. The event, held in March, is the pinacle of the year with the best 16 student teams competing to win the title of BUSA Winners.
